Welcome to Our Off-Grid Journey on Serendipity Ranch Arizona!
We’re Scott and Scarlett, a Christian couple pursuing sustainable living on our off-grid homestead Serendipity Ranch Arizona located in Northeast Arizona’s Apache County. This blog chronicles our adventure as we develop our land and embrace a healthier lifestyle, living in harmony with God’s creation.
Scott serves our community through bartering and volunteer work, and he has the privilege of preaching every other Sunday at our local church. As a software engineer, I’m building my web development business by day while contributing to open-source projects in my free time.
Finding Our Footing
After four years on this land, we’ve learned that survival comes first in this rugged terrain. The initial lifestyle transition and unique challenges of remote Arizona living demanded our complete focus until recently. Through it all, we’ve discovered that community isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
We struggled in isolation for years before discovering our local church through their off-grid living classes. These sessions became our lifeline, teaching us invaluable skills while connecting us with incredible neighbors who’ve become family. Last year, when we rolled our truck and I suffered a broken arm that developed MRSA, our community’s response was nothing short of miraculous. Church members coordinated transportation to medical appointments 150 miles away, ensuring I received the care I needed.
Our Current Setup
Operating on a tight budget while my business grows means progress comes slowly, but we’re comfortable in our two trailers. We’ve established a reliable solar power system and haul water to fill our 2,500-gallon tank, thankfully located not far from a well.
Our homestead family includes 14 dogs, 12 cats, and 5 chickens—quite the menagerie! We’ll expand our livestock and infrastructure as finances allow. Currently, we’re preparing our soil for next year’s garden, and I couldn’t be more excited. Community members have been generous with their knowledge, teaching me everything from soil composition to crop rotation.

We hope you’ll enjoy following our rollercoaster journey of homesteading in Northeast Arizona. Through successes and setbacks, we’re building something meaningful—a life rooted in faith, community, and sustainable living.
